Isn't it spring?

Because it doesn't feel like it's nearly May. Right now, at nearly 11AM, it's only 47F here, and tonight it's supposed to be down in the mid 30sF. Guess that blanket comes out of my car and goes over the maters before I leave in hopes that they survive the chill. They're starting to put out several new leaves, and I would really hate to have them poop out on me just as they are getting to be decent. Unless I can find some old water jugs on the ground somewhere ... then I can cut out the bottoms and stick those over the maters for instant greenhouses. I MAY have a few old half-gallon milk jugs that got rinsed out and saved for that purpose in the tool room closet somewhere. Maybe. Just maybe I'll get lucky. Cross your fingers, lol.

It's just too windy and cold and wet again to get outside. I'll be so glad when the weekend gets here, because it's supposed to be warmer, which will be nice, since we'll be able to get outside and do a lot Sunday. I would say Saturday as well, except that Saturday is errands day because it's usually the first day of the week when we can get out and do a lot at once other than work. Sometimes, this work away from home thing really sucks. It pays well, but I will be so glad to get income here going better so I don't have to. That is our goal, and I work hard at it. I am extremely blessed that Quentin does support me in my goals, even when he laughs at them. As I told several people last night, he laughs that my books-to-write list is incredibly long, but ... eventually they will get written and be producing a nice little income, along with other things that I want to do.

I can hardly wait for this Saturday. The load of scrap metal is going with us so we can empty the trailer and that money will allow us to easily go and do some extra shopping that we normally wouldn't do. In the main, it's exciting because the local Homesteader's Swap Meet is this Saturday (1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month in the warm weather) and there's also a swap meet at the hardware and feed store in Harrison as well. There's a lot to do this weekend, and if the temps come up about ten degrees while I'm home, there's a lot I can get done outside, too. I don't really mind sitting on my butt to make money, but I do so want to be outside doing more, just to get out and do things.

But I did get out yesterday before I left and got a photo for y'all, and I feel good about that. It's not much, but it's a start on oddball improvised planters. Once I can get back to the Merlot, there's a lot of pieces of paneling I can lay down on the grass, shiny side down, to kill it and allow us not to have to weed whack around all the pots and things (plus I won't have to move them in order to clear around them, or spend a load of money on getting pavers underneath everything on top of the stuff), because it's got to be done. So there's a bit of cardboard down and a piece of an old hollow core door down (one panel side) to cover some grass up. What you see in "planters" is the one I got to put the tomatoes in, an old shallow dog dish (a lettuce, maybe?), an old coleman cooler, a housecleaning caddy that has cracks in the bottom (easy drainage, lol), and the bottom of an old military box of some sort.

That last was under the trailer and was a find in and of itself. While it didn't have a lid to begin with, it was heavy when I pulled it out. The one orange bucket with a cracked bottom and no handle got partly filled up with the stuff in it. A bunch of really rusty wrenches and sockets, and even a T-square. All ruined through leaving them outdoors to rust. But there's a good twenty pounds or so of stuff there to add to this weekend's scrap load.

But I need to go find kleenex ... this weather has my sinuses draining, ugh. Thought that was over for the year, but apparently not! Then I need to find books and do some other writing, and once Quentin's off to work, I need to eat and pack my lunch. Then maybe I'll sneak in a quick snooze with the alarm on just in case ... cuz I'm actually still kind of sleepy, and since hubby won't be here to keep on talking to me ... lol. Love him to death, but getting in a nap when he's home becomes a marathon of waking up and dozing off .. .and he wonders why my naps are marathon four-hour sessions when he's home!

Still windy, haha

But I'll get some stuff done outside once hubby leaves for work. I love him to death, but he wants to leave for work so early that I don't get much done around here outside, and I'm a little tired of that. I kid y'all not, we don't start shift until 5PM, so at worst, we'd have to leave by 4PM to get there, park and go in around 15-20 minutes ahead of time. That's plenty for me. I'm there 8 or more hours a day anyhow working, I don't really want to live there, no matter how much I like my job (especially with the shift premium and the little bit of overtime I get now). Him? As soon as he's done with getting ready (starting at 10AM, when we get up), he wants to be out the door. We've tried for a week of having him wait a little longer, leaving about 230 or 3PM ... he's mostly okay with it, even though he'd rather leave no later than 1230 or 1PM - yes, folks, FOUR HOURS before he has to be there!

It hasn't worked well. It's gotten me behind on things I need to do, it's leaving me feeling rushed because he is constantly asking why I didn't do something earlier (maybe because there was something more important on my to-do list?), and he feels like I'm just "goofing off" and "wasting time." So it's back to two cars, so he can leave when he wants and I can leave when I want, and no disputes about it. Truthfully, it'll be more relaxing for us both. We haven't fought about it, but there has been a bit of snipping at each other, and that's not good. While I appreciate that he's trying to save gas and give me more knitting time, it just isn't working out like we hoped. Hey, we gave it a good shot. Besides, I really need to drive myself in to fight what traffic there is (not much, country living does have it's serious advantages), so I get that bit of adrenalin rush to wake up for work. Not driving myself is leaving me dragging all the time, lol!!

On the other hand, once I get outside with the camera (likely after I post this so no shot of it today), I can show you some of what I've gotten done in the way of found items for raised beds/containers. (Sorry, had to interrupt writing to cuddle Bouncer, he wanted loving on, and y'all know I can't resist that sweet kitty face! Yeah, I'm a sucker ... I am so pwned by the cats.) I was a bad girl yesterday, too. We had to stop at the Dollar Store for a couple of things on the way to work yesterday, and Quentin had to go to a different store in town for something else. He dropped me off ... bad idea when they have cheap seed packets. Yeah, I got more, lol. Sparkler White Tip radish (great for a bit of kick in potato salad), Jalapeno pepper (for sale at the market and seed saving, I can't eat the things), Seven Top turnip (can't find rutabaga which I prefer, but these get mashed with taters), Sugar Baby watermelon (I can't stand melon of any kind, and Quentin doesn't like it as he got tired of it as a kid, so this is a market/seed saving item), more Chantenay carrots, Vates collards (market/seed saving), Black Beauty eggplant, and Large Red Cherry tomato.

I also got lucky with a seed contest on one of my Facebook groups, simply by picking the correct/closest number from a range, and have six packets of seed coming from that. Two types of squash, anise hyssop, mixed peppers, yellow pear tomato and Goji berry! So that will add to the stash a little bit. I am going to be adding to my seed stash as much as I can ... what I don't want can always be trade items or grown for market/seed saving ... which means more for sale/trade from saved seed. Now if I can just get all my ideas going to produce income. I have one income stream right now that is bringing in around $100 a month. If I can get it to double that, plus four or five more doing the same thing (or 8-10 doing around $100 a month), I'll be making enough to be able to quit the plant and go back to being a stay at home. Which would mean more time for gardening and crafting (fun and sale) and all the other things I'd like to do.

Right now, however, I need to find you guys some freebie books and get some work done writing the two I'm slowly chugging through. The one requires a research, the other requires just time and effort, but they are going slow. If not for work, I'd be a lot further along a lot faster, lol!!! But they'll happen, just not as fast as I'd like!

Wet and windy

It's a bit too wet from last night's storm, and a bit windy as well, to be able to safely get out and burn trash, even in a burn barrel. If I do any wood cutting later before work, it will have to be small stuff that is still standing in my size, because the big trees Quentin's felled that need limbing up are all up a that bit of slope heading to the bluff behind the house. With all the rocks there, and leaves, even with my hiking shoes, I'm afraid I'd fall with my balance issues. It's hard enough getting around there when it's dry. You darned near have to be half-goat! When it's wet, I say forget it!

But I can get out and do some garden prep work - digging out all the oddball containers around here and getting them up by the house, laying down cardboard under everything to kill the grass, putting down tires for beds. I really would rather just use the bags of topsoil, but considering how much weed whacking has to be done around here to keep the ticks down to a dull roar, I know for a fact the bags would get split open the first time one of us "mowed" the yard. So it's pots, planters, buckets, tires, and whatever else I can find that will hold a plant.

I'll also, over the next few weeks, be building some trellises to lean against the house to support the climbing and vining plants, like beans, peas, cukes, and melons. I'll have more seeds to play with soon, as one of my Facebook groups likes to do seed giveaways on a regular basis, and surprisingly, I won last night! I forget which group, I'll have to ask the lady sending me the seeds so I can post a public woohoo and thanks. I can't wait to see what is in there!

But it's time for books and breakfast and getting outside to get done what I can (with all the rain last night, at least I don't have to water the "garden" such as it is), and then go to work and play with chicken boobs all night. See you guys!!

Spring rains

And boy, do we need the rain. We're about a foot behind average right now, so the next few days being stormy or possibly stormy will be a big help. That it also means I don't have to get out and water my maters is a help as well. We didn't get the laundry indoors before it rained last night because we kind of forgot about it, but it didn't get that wet, just damp. So Quentin's jeans are hanging up on the shower rod right now to finish drying. We turned on the space heater long enough to fully dry one pair so he has clean, dry jeans for work tomorrow.

Before it started raining, we got going (me on short sleep ... I had trouble getting to sleep last night and then it has been go go go since 10AM) and made a quick run back to Harrison. We needed to return our RedBox movies plus hubby wanted to get some PVC pipe glue and primer to work on the conduit for the internet cable, which putting it into pipe will make it easier to weed whack around it without having to worry about cutting it up. We also stopped by Home Depot for me - more veggie seeds and five more bags of good topsoil. I am seriously considering that since most of the stuff I want to grow doesn't need really deep root systems, other than the carrots, planting directly into the bags ... just cut a small X for the seed to be planted and go from there. Granted, there are a number of oddball things around here I can use for planting in, but if I can avoid buying containers, so much the better.

Oh, what I got today! White Lisbon Bunching onion (I do love me green onions), Super Sweet 100 tomato (hybrid, but I wanted some cherry maters to sell at the farmers market), Maestro pea, Roma tomato, Brandywine Red tomato, California Wonder bell pepper, Carnival Hybrid mix bell pepper (ok, so I like the colors, and again, more to sell), Early Acorn Hybrid squash (more hybrid, but I couldn't find seed locally for the non-hybrid ... do love me my acorn squash), and a couple more packets of Blue Lake 274 green beans, because I do know how hubby likes to eat what the kids used to call "greem beams" when they were really little. Being what Quentin calls a "seed freak," I will likely keep buying up seeds until I can't get anymore for the year, and store them away. Plus with other things I'm doing, getting some off Amazon and from various seed companies to store away ... heh. There is going to be SOME kind of garden here this year, darn it!

Internet is in and out because it's raining so hard, but I'm doing what I can while I can and calling it done. I have a lot of things I need to do that require me to be online, but not all of them can be done in one day. Some of these to-do projects really are long-term things to do, just they get done in bits and pieces till one day, they are complete. The storm is passing for the moment, but we barely got home, got stuff unloaded and got it and us indoors before the floodgates opened. It was enough that power flickered for a moment, too. But it's pretty well over for this round, though it sure is nice to hear that thunder!

Saturday again

And of course, that means many more errands that have to be run (grocery staples, laundry, other odds and ends down in Harrison), plus we had a scrap run to make to get a trailer load of junk metal from a friend who was moving. The stuff was nasty, to the point that after we loaded up and got up the road a tiny bit to a nearby gas station, we pulled in to go wash our hands. I kid you not, it took soaping up three times to get all that yuck off my hands. I am not one to cringe at dirt, but this was not dirt, it was nasty, stinky filth. Yeah, it was just that bad.

But while doing errands, I did something that will highly encourage me to get the bailer bucket pieces I need bought and to get the thing built, because while at Wally World and the dollar store next to the laundromat, I ummm ... well, I got some seeds. Ok, so the packets are really not that big, and likely some of it I will have to get MORE packets, but I've got enough odds and ends for planters around here, or I can get some 5-gallon buckets from Home Depot for more, that I have plenty of places to grow things. I want to get some beefsteak tomato seeds and some bell pepper seeds too, but I can't find any, which means if I want more maters or any peppers, I will have to buy plants. Ugh. Oh well. That just means a trip to Home Depot tomorrow so I can look for pepper plants and some more good compost, and maybe a few more tomato plants, if I can't find seeds I want for both. It's a bit late to get a garden going from seed, but spring was pretty off and on chilly for the last few weeks.

So what all did I get? I got Blue Lake 274 green beans (need more), Sweet Spanish Utah Strain onions, Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, Alaska pea (need more), Dark Green zucchini, Waltham Butternut squash, Giant Noble spinach (may need more), Straightneck Early Yellow squash, Marketmore cucumber (I want to make bread and butter pickles with Great-Grandma Myrtle's recipe), and Danvers 126 carrots (need more). Quentin saw cantaloupe, and picked out a packet of Hale's Best. He likes melons, so I'll grow him some. I never developed a taste for them, but I will happily grow him some. Any extras can be sold at the local swap meet, though I'd have to get up super early, because they only run 8AM to noon twice a month. Whew. I think more beans, peas, greens, and carrots will go over well.

Of course, not only does this mean I have GOT to get the bailer bucket done so I can fish water out of the well to at least water the garden, but I will also have to spend some time on a couple of weekends this summer building a solar dehydrator to dry and store some of the veggies for winter soups. Cukes means buying pint jars for pickles and quart jars for storing the dried stuff. Also means cardboard boxes for stuff like the carrots, potatoes if I can get any in, etc., so they will stay dry and cool in the front bedroom off the kitchen, and not be exposed to light. Quentin thought we'd have to spend a chunk of change on getting some poles to use for giving things like the beans and peas something to climb, or building trellises for the cukes and squash and melons, or staking up the maters ... but I pointed out all the saplings around here that are in the 5-10 foot tall range that just need cutting down and debudding so they can be used at least for this year. Just keep picking the buds off so they can't sprout and grow into bigger trees, and voila - free stakes barring the time on them. I'm all for cheap or free, lol.

And the clothesline is getting a workout. The dryer apparently didn't want to work quite right and we had to get stuff going to finish errands in some kind of reasonable time, so some stuff was still a bit damp when the dryer was done. I wish I had a better place to put a clothesline here, but right now, I don't. So all the stuff has to get done at the laundromat. But the damp stuff came home and got hung out ... should be dry by morning, easily. Goodness knows it's warm enough! But right now, Smudge just snuggled up to me and wants attention and I have to edit photos for today to show you stuff, and I need to find you some books before it gets too late tonight!

It's tick season

Yuck. Found the first ticks of the year yesterday on Quentin. I've got bites but no hangers-on, shall we say, but I had to pull a couple of the hubby. I hate ticks. It's the one thing about country living I loathe. But when you live on a property that's been let go for twenty years, it's something you learn to live with. You do tick patrol whenever you have been outside. It also means Quentin definitely needs to get out with the weedwhacker and trim up the "lawn" this weekend, such as we have. It's tiny, and there's a lot of big rocks and things sticking up that would tear up a mower, so we have no choice but to weedwhack. Well, that or let it grow to waist high and have even more ticks to deal with, along with snakes and spiders. I'd rather avoid the snakes, because this area is rife with timber rattlers. I still remember the one the power company scared up a couple summers ago when they were brush hogging the easement. Thanks, but I'll just avoid that.

It is sure pretty though. All the green. I know, I said it yesterday, but gosh it is GREEN and gorgeous out. I hope I can get out today and do a bit before we leave for work. Sure would be nice, because nothing but work and sleep and online stuff and writing really does not do it for this homesteading lady. I like being outdoors a lot. I don't care if I'm just burning trash, I like to be outdoors, not locked up in some stuffy plant mutilating chickens, lol. Anyhow, I am off to find some food, make my lunch, and find y'all some books. Hugs all!!!

Fun day, but wet

It's raining this morning, and it's supposed to rain for most of the next week. This is not good for getting things done outdoors before work, but good for my tomatoes and good for my writing. That last is slogging along, because part of what I'm doing requires me to do some extra formatting, so it takes a bit. But I think it will be worth it when it's done, if it works out like I want it to.

It's just chilly enough from the damp that we have the heater on. It's making the bedroom comfy for getting ready for work. I'm ready, but then again, I'm used to only having about an hour to get ready to roll. Quentin's taking his time as always, but he's used to having lots of time. The time I wait for him so we can ride to work together in the truck (thus saving some gas), I spend working on things either outdoors or on the computer. This next week is mostly going to be on the laptop, lol. I'm just glad that I've been able to get out the first few days this week and do something.

We did have a bit of excitement this morning first thing. I got up about 7AM to feed the boys (their schedule hasn't changed a bit when it comes to their tummies, haha! and found we had no power. Ooops. "Hey, honey, good morning," says my sleepy spouse from the bed. "Hey, sweetie," says I. "Can you call the power company, we have no juice." "SAY WHAT? We paid the bill!" "Yes, dear, they didn't shut off the power, I think everybody is out, I can't see Cliff's yard light through the trees." "Well, crap. Okay." Turns out quite a bit of the area had lost power, though we don't know why yet. But we got juice back around our usual wakeup time. Good think I don't rely on a electric clock for time and alarm, or we might still be asleep! Not that I'd mind, but work is important, too, in order to pay bills and get things done that need doing right now. There will come a day when I don't have to leave the house to work, but that is not now.

For the moment, however, I need to find you guys some books and get some writing done. Sure hope the freebies list isn't full of nothing but cookbooks today ... I'm getting a little tired of Paleo everything, lol!!!

Green and gorgeous

Man, my arms are tired from all I'm doing at work now, or more appropriately, from what I'm doing all day, lol. Turns out my new partner hates flipping boobs to go through the x-ray machine about as much as I hate trimming, so we don't bother rotating until late in the night, just to keep our skills fresh on the other job. Which means my arms are sore from doing one thing most of the night,  but it's a good kind of sore. A little muscle rub and I'll be fine as fivepence.

As to around here, with as long as we've been running, which cuts into sleep unless I sleep in (and Quentin being up at 10AM like he likes to be means I don't get quite the sleep I'm used to, because it's get up or get disturbed rest, lol ... I'll just get up so I go to sleep faster when we get home) .... well, it all means not as much gets done outside because honestly, I am just freaking tired and sore. There will be days when little things get done, but there are now going to be a lot of days when very little gets done other than watering my tomatoes, and anything else I end up putting in this year. But hey, it's money to pay off back bills so we're out of debt, and we can get things bought that we need, and eventually (or "evegtablely" as my son, Ian, used to say when he was very little), get a home of our own. Preferably one where we don't have to clean up someone else's trash. But I did get some wood cut again this morning while waking up, so that's something. Gosh, I love the "noise" of hand tools that don't scare the wildlife. Saw our hawk again this morning and a couple of deer in the distance as I was pruning some limbs off a downed tree.

And the weather is absolutely beautiful for everything. It rained some the other day and is supposed to rain some this weekend. The trees and all around here have gotten so green in these last few days. Leaves are palm-sized (for me), and getting bigger every day. It is just beautiful to see all the pretty greenery. Now, however it's time for your booklist for the day, and me to water the "garden" and get myself off to work!

I am enjoying second shift

Despite working well past general quitting time of 130AM, because we worked until 3AM, and my feet ache ... but it was fun. Things are more lenient on second in certain things, tougher in a couple of others, but not to where it's a burden. So despite things, it was fun. Making more money makes it more fun. Getting to spend a little extra time with hubby makes it all the better. Add in that I've got 1 1/2 hours toward possible overtime already this week without having to fight for it just makes it fantastic. Of course, once things here are organized to where I'll have to start doing farmer's markets, I'll have to go back to a first shift schedule, just I'll end up leaving the plant at that point, we've already decided that one a LONG time ago, well before I put in for my transfer.

Mind, getting through the extra-long night was difficult because I'm used to being asleep well before we got done, but I managed okay. Wasn't very easy, but I hung on to the bitter end. Then we had to come home through some of the thickest bloody fog I have seen around here. Dang near zero visibility! Wow, what a trip that was!

I did get some stuff done yesterday before work, anyhow. Got some trash cleaned up and my maters lightly watered (because it rained yesterday) and some serious wood cutting done. Basically just limbing up some trees Quentin had downed with the pruning saw, and doing what I could to make some of it into firewood ... that pruning saw is a good investment, as it limbs up trees in tight spots darned quick. No more having to drag up my chainsaw and a bucket of small tools and hoping they'll be enough. Bigger, deeper teeth and less of them per inch make that thing extremely aggressive for limbing and trimming. Heehee. Momma has a new hand toy and she LIKES it! But it's time for me to get some food and get busy finding y'all some books!

Nice to sleep in, haha

Even though I'll be starting on second shift tonight, it's awful nice to be able to sleep a bit later in the day. I've never been all that comfortable getting up at the crack of dawn, even when the kids were little and in school, and I was working with my Mom in her accounting and tax office. Even at Butterball and this last year, first shift has never been all that easy for me. I can do it, but the getting up so early really bites some days. Sometimes, it's just the fact that working through the dark and sleeping when everybody else, it seems, has to be up so early, makes the day go better and faster. (Though I'm still trying to figure out where this last year went.)

Quentin and I are both hoping this week kind of zips by, though tomorrow being my anniversary, he still keeps teasing me about it being annoying that for those first eight hours, I'll make nearly $23 an hour. Hee hee. That's going to be fun. Right now, he's sitting next to me with his armguards (because he's on the cone line and has to use sharp knives, and be next to people doing same, he has to have them for protective gear) ... he's redoing his name on his so folks will know which ones are his. When we go to lunch break, everybody has to dump their arm guards in the tub for gear so it can be washed and sterilized ... and it's a bit hard to find the same ones you had in the morning if your name isn't on them. So everybody pretty much marks theirs in some way to indicate which ones belong to each person.

It's going to rain today, which will be good for my maters. Saves me watering them, haha. I really need to get a small two-wheeled wheelbarrow, too, so we can clean up more crap and get big logs to the woodpile and such much faster than we have been able to do so far. It's piece by inch getting things done, but little by little, things can happen now with more income going to be coming in from my extra on the paycheck (the shift premium plus any overtime), and I can hardly wait to share the projects with all of you as they get done. Life is going to be getting so exciting now that things are making some changes!

Happy Easter!

No matter what your faith path, I hope today is brining you lots of joy and happiness at all the signs of spring everyone seems to be having now that Old Man Winter has finally lost his bitter cold grip on the land in the Northern Hemisphere. Here, as usual on a homestead, it brings work, lol. Happiness yes, but work as well. Farm chores never end, and no matter what some well-meaning but ill-informed folks think, with a farm or homestead, there are no sick days, there are no vacations, there are no days off, no sleeping in (well, not much) and certainly none of what most folks think happen. "Oh, you homestead? Gosh, I bet you get to spend a lot of time watching TV and eating bonbons, don't you?"

Uh, no. First, I'm not even sure what a bonbon is. (On searching, it seems to primarily be a chocolate-covered, bite-size or slightly larger than that, ice cream ball. Ok, I can go with the bonbons!) Second, TV really doesn't hold that much interest for me. I'd rather write, or work on the business end of things here, or be outside doing things like cutting wood or clearing up trash or whatever! Or like today - cutting wood was part of it, as was burning trash (had to get the house cans emptied), but I got my tomatoes planted in their planter. Hunting round, I also found a number of things I can use for improvised planters. Hee hee. There's more than one way to get a garden in around here. I'm bound and determined to get in a salad and soup garden this year, one way or another. So far, not doing so good with only four tomatoes in, but at least they are heirlooms, so I can save the seeds to grow more next year without having to buy plants or seeds.

But it's awful humid outside. The last few days have gotten warm rather quickly, which is nice, barring that we haven't had a chance to adapt, the way the temps bounced around for the last few weeks. And we've had to quit outside stuff because we need a late lunch and it's getting gray out, so it's likely to rain before we can get lunch finished and get back out there.

And in a few hours, when it gets dark out, I'm making dinner. Pork steaks, green beans and stuffing. Yummy. So scuse me, I am going to eat lunch, find y'all some good books and relax the afternoon away with business stuff. (I know, I'm nuts, business stuff is fun? Yeah, to me, it is.)

LONG day!

We left home at 9AM this morning, and it's nearly 930PM as I sit down to write. So no books tonight, because honestly, by the time I get them found and all, it would be close to 11PM before they would be done and ready to post. So I'm going to have to skip them for tonight, my apologies to all the folks who look forward to them. I'll do a double-day tomorrow, because, being Ostara (Easter to most folks), we are not going anywhere, other than hubby hauling our RedBox movies back to the kiosk.

And today was an incredibly long day. So much got done. We would have been home a lot earlier, barring that our landlords needed us to help them with a couple of things, so that was several hours we weren't here. But on top of those things, laundry, groceries (and pricing out supplies for a few money-making ideas I have), Race Brothers for sawdust for the sawdust toity and a cheap find that gave me a big happy, and then Home Depot for a few things.

The happy? I spent a couple bucks on some tomato plants!! Race Brothers had some plants, mostly hybrids, which I refuse to get because I can't save seeds from them. Now, they did have Roma Tomatoes, but I wanted beefsteaks. I hunted and actually found a four-pack of ARKANSAS TRAVELER!!!!! So of course, when we got to Home Depot, I got a large planter and some soil for them. There's a small but six inch or so deep little wading pool still laying out back of the trailer that's never gotten hauled off or anything, and in a few weeks, when I have more soil to put in it, I'm going to tip them out of the plant and "repot" them into the kiddie pool so they have room to sprawl.

However, there are a few other things that are a bit more practical right now to accomplish, because it's not like the maters are going to be big enough to bloom any time soon anyhow. They're maybe six inches tall at most right now, so there's a bit of play for them till I have to have them in more room. We got the pruning saw we need to help trim and limb faster and easier than the little hand saw will do (especially for bigger limbs off the BIG trees Quentin keeps bringing down), but we still need to grab my little grabber thingy to pick up small stuff off the ground (a lot easier than blasted well picking it up by bending over all the time), and the bailer bucket to put together for the well. The last, even if the water is only good enough for watering a garden, and if I can get enough water out of it easily, will make things a lot easier for a lot of what I want to get done.

So yay me, for all that's been able to get done today, but boohoo that I don't get to find a bunch of books for you guys!!!!! Oh well, such is life when you have a homestead. You don't always get to do what you want to do when you want to do it, or how you want to do it. Night folks, I'm pooped, and I still have to stay up for hours yet, because I need to learn to stay up later than I'm used to so I can be ready for Monday, woohoo!!!! Catch you guys on the flip side tomorrow!

Bittersweet endings, new beginnings

Well, today marked the last day on first shift. It went okay, not too bad, just boring becaue I got moved from my normal job to assist elsewhere. While it passed the time, it did so really slowly. Might have just been my perception, because I wanted the day over with. So, naturally, the day dragged on and on! My best friend was the only one who said goodbye to me, and hugged me, and then I started crying. Right there in front of everybody. I've had a good run on first shift, and I'll miss a lot of people there. But second is a good move for me, and one I requested for multiple reasons. More time with the hubby, less worries in a bad winter about being able to get to work  (if it's that bad, I'll just ride with him), a bit of a pay hike (40c an hour) and a bit of overtime most weeks.

Just means blogging and the booklist and other online stuff will have to be done BEFORE I go to work and not after I come home, haha! So I'm a bit sad to be leaving my friends on first shift, but I have hubby and a lot of friends on second shift from the first time I worked for Tysons, all of whom are saying, "Welcome home!" They seem to think I "belong" on second shift, lol. They may be right. I do enjoy getting up a bit later in the morning than first shift requires, and don't mind working nights. So I'm a bit happy too, because I wanted this transfer and finally got it, and I'm going right where I want to be - back on x-ray, where I worked on first shift already. So same job, just a different shift. Makes the transition really easy!

Coming home tonight, I got a surprise just before the driveway on the mountain road. Our mountain's red-tailed hawk was sitting on a low branch on the left side of the road, and I startled him with the car. He took off and swooped up the road with me, at eye level. So beautiful. Heard the first cricket of the year on the way to the house from the car, too, so temperatures are rising nicely and staying out of the chilly temps. Soon, the air will be alive with the sound of the local bumblebees buzzing (I think we have a wild hive of honeybees somewhere, too, as I saw some last year but nobody on the mountain has hives), the tree frogs and the crickets.  Of course, since it's spring, the boys have to be brushed daily, because they are blowing coat like crazy. My laptop keyboard is rather fuzzy right now if I pet either one of them, haha!

Anyhow, I'm off to work on the booklist and spending my evening and half the night (trying to shift my schedule starting tonight to make it easier to adjust) working on my book that I'm writing so I can get a few more pages done in it the way I want them. Hugs, till tomorrow!

Well, it's official!

My lead on days now knows that tomorrow is my last day with her. Carlos told her today, and everybody is sad I'm going to nights, but glad, too, that I've got the guts to take it on and get away from a lead who is more a boss and doesn't understand how to effectively do most of the jobs. She's learning some stuff, but the things that are basic to the job, as far as being able to relieve us for bathroom breaks and do our job well while we're gone, are just evading her completely. There are other issues as well, but suffice it to say that in some ways, I'm kind of sad, but in some I'm kind of glad. At least Tuesday, being my anniversary day, means that for eight hours, I will make more per hour than Quentin, lol. $11.40 for my regular pay and then $11.40 for my eight hours "holiday pay," as your anniversary day at Tysons is considered one of our eight paid holidays during the year. Everybody on second shift is looking forward to having me there; they really need an experienced set of hands to fill in a hole, and that will be me.

As far as non-work, the seasonal creeks are starting to dry up a little bit, but are still running hard and high for the most part. Trees and brush are starting to green up quite a bit, with what was barely nubs of leaf buds last week now fluffing out to tiny new leaves for this year. I saw the first butterfly of the year this afternoon when I got home - some kind of black swallowtail. And I have a job for Quentin this weekend, if he can squeak it in somewhere in his copious amounts of spare time (HA! He hasn't got any more spare time than I do, and mine's in pretty short supply!) ... well, he needs to put Victor up on the ramps and chock the rear tires and slide underneath. My little car has a bit of an exhaust leak somewhere. It's small but if it's not taken care of with a chunk of exhaust tape NOW, it's just going to get worse fast and be more costly to fix in the end. Fixing it won't be a problem. Wrap it up in exhaust tape and done. FINDING it will be the bugger, because it's not big, just enough for me to notice Victor doesn't sound like a happy purr right now, but a rather cheesed off bumble bee BZZZZZZZ-ing down the road.

I also know what's wrong with this laptop, and have at least temporarily fixed it. The poor thing is three years old and the power cord is a bit frayed in a couple of spots. Black electrical tape has repaired that for now, and possibly this weekend, Quentin will also find copious spare time to clip out the bit between the frays, and splice them back together. I may just have him leave it alone for now and not trouble trouble till trouble troubles me again. (Plus not having to worry if clipping and splicing will leave me with a working power cord when he's done ... probably would, but I don't know that I want to risk it.)

I need to go find you guys some books - there's a real slew of them tonight, I see, so hopefully, I can stay awake long enough to get them to you! Pizza Hut for dinner tonight (Q's is waiting for him to get home) to celebrate the shift change, Easter, and my anniversary, and I ate my whole half, I was just that hungry. Only the carbs have me snoozy!!!! (Ok, on second look, not so many. Somebody wrote up a bunch of booklets and various types of wineries in the Napa Valley.)

Some good news, some iffy news

Good news is, I got my transfer to second shift, which means Monday, books and such will be a lot earlier in the day. Assuming the iffy news doesn't turn into horribly bad news. Iffy news being, my laptop is trying to die on me by not recharging. I've tried everything, and it only works part of the time. Good thing Tuesday is my anniversary at work. I was planning on holding off selling my vacation time back to the company and taking the money for another few weeks, until that stupid garnishment dies off for at least a couple of weeks, but in light of this, I think I'll take it ASAP and put it towards that laptop I've been eyeing at WalMart. It's $400, plus tax, but worth it. Guess my holiday pay for my anniversary and my vacation pay will get me a new laptop sooner than I thought would happen. So if I turn up missing unexpectedly, you'll know what happened. (And to think I thought I could make this one last a while longer and put that money toward paying off a couple of back bills .... oh well.)

On the other hand, the new laptop I'm eyeing is faster, has more memory, and a bigger hard drive. It also has a touch screen. Unfortunately, it has also got Windows 8 on it, which I'm not fond of, but I guess I'll just have to get used to it. It also looks like the hard drive from this one will have to go into my old other laptop that really needs Windows reinstalled, but I think trading hard drives will give the older one some new life and allow Quentin to learn to use a computer. The good news for Quentin is, the power cord from both of them is pretty much the same and works on both, because both this one and the old one are Acers.

Unfortunately, it was a teeny bit chilly tonight when I got home, so no outside work done today. But that's fine, still lots to do indoors. Though I'm looking forward to the shift change. I'll have to work on changing things out as far as what I do and when. It means my time online will be before I go to work instead of after I get home, along with anything I want to get done outside. I'm good with that, because at least outside work can get done when it's warmest, even in the middle of winter. This also means that in colder weather, I can still get out and do SOMETHING. Wins all around, ya know?

So while I have this one actually deciding to charge up like it's supposed to for the moment, I'll get busy on books and doing whatever else I can. Hugs all ... Time for fun!

Warmer but still chilly

It's warmer today, though tonight is supposed to be chillier again, though not nearly as cold as last night. Mostly, I just hurt from some bug or other I have picked up. And I'm sleepy. I'm doing this earlier than usual, because I took the day off work. Honestly, I wish I could work from home strictly and make the dough that way, so I didn't have to go to the plant. It's more Quentin's idea of fun than mine, but bills and such have to be paid somehow, and that's how we do it right now. Though I'm working on other things and we'll see how they work out, because goodness knows, I really want to get things going to where I don't have to do that anymore. The cold just finally got to me after six weeks of not missing any time at all, and I never even heard the alarm go off - probably because I was so tired I forgot to set it, so instead of waking up at 7AM, I woke up at 815!!! Ooops.

So I called in to take the day off and figured what the heck, it's a few more hours to get things done around here once I roust my butt out of the warmth of bed, only now I have a troublesome neck ache that is stopping that. What I really want is a nap. The boys are asleep next to me and their snoring is making me snoozy, too. But there are chores to be done.

BRRR!!!! What happened to Spring?

It's just that cold. Seriously, folks, this is not funny if Old Man Winter wants to play a joke on us. There are a lot of people going to get cold again because they are all prepped for warmer weather. I'm glad we hadn't put the space heater or the afghans or flannel sheets away for the summer yet, because we needed them last night and will again tonight. After all that rain yesterday, which at times was hard enough to scare Smudge into hiding and later into cuddling tight up against my leg and purring to self-soothe, it got into the 30sF. It got warmish today, high 50sF, but it's been so windy and damp from yesterday that it didn't feel like it. It's supposed to get into the high 20sF tonight. Yeeek!!!

I am hunkering down in the bedroom where it's warmest and have some movies here (Avengers, Green Lantern, and Ghost Rider) to keep me company for the evening. The living room is barely 50F, and there is no way I'm sitting down there and freezing just to catch up on Once Upon a Time (I'm addicted to that show - Robert Carlyle makes a great Rumple, and I can't help but giggle myself every time Rumple does that creepy giggle of his), or Castle. I'll catch up ONline, thank you very much, with my knitting and the laptop to help keep me busy while watching. As my Mom likes to say when people are trying to get her to do something stupid, "I may have been born at night, but I wasn't born LAST night." I know enough that with my fibromyalgia, that if I'm already cold, as from work, and it's chilly, my best option is under covers to thaw out, because my worst spots are around my knees and hips. Yeah, go figure - all that I do, and I have mild fibro, and still do it, especially the homesteading chores. I must be a glutton for punishmnet, lol.

I do have a picture for you of the dogwood. It's so pretty this time of year, all in bloom. It's not that good a photo - the sunset is almost behind it, and so there' s alot of glare I can't fix. Grrr. Sorry about that! If the freeze doesn't kill the blooms, I'll get a better photo later this week or this weekend when I can do it during good daylight, so it will show up better.

I cheated on dinner tonight. Mini meatloaves. I just make up meatloaf mix, and freeze it in my mini bread loaf pans. Then when we're having meatloaf for dinner, I pull a couple out for each of us, let them thaw all day in the fridge, and cook them when I get home. Quick fix for dinner and delicious! I put cheese in the middle for extra flavor, and the traditional ketchup on top, which last only goes on when they are almost done cooking.

But now it's on to the books, so hugs everybody and stay warm!

Quiet Sunday

Because it's sprinkling pretty hard today. I knew it would be rainy - there was a 90% chance of thunderstorms today, according to the weatherman. So far, no t-storms, just sprinkle sprinkle sprinkle. If I hadn't run out the batteries on the camera, I'd have a picture for you of the dogwood just off the deck. It is in full bloom and looks so pretty. But it will still be there tomorrow for a photo, and the batteries will be charged then.

Things are starting to green up, but boy do we need a really good drenching downpour spread out over several days. Basically, we need lots of rain, a bit of drying out, more rain, more drying out, over about a week, in order to get up to the amount of rain we are supposed to have had by now. Depending on where you are in the mid-Missiouri to NW Arkansas area, we are between six and twelve inches shy of needed rainfall to avoid a drought this summer. This is not good, folks. Rain is a needed commodity from Mother Nature, and right now, we are getting shorted badly.

Quentin and I had to go haul some of the landlady's mother's trash here yesterday to get it burned up. JJ was a big help to getting it loaded up. There are reasons for it, which I won't go into here, as they're a bit unnecessary to talk about, but suffice it to say that we brought it here on the trailer, and Quentin spent part of today, when it wasn't raining too badly, burning what he could of it while I got some inside chores done. The boys figure this kind of weather is for snoozing. Bouncer is sprawled on the back of the couch by Quentin (who is now busy watching some TV while I'm busy writing, now that things are done), and Smudge is sprawled near me on the bed on Quentin's side. Half on his back, front feet in the air, and sound asleep. We are talking snoring, folks, and he snores as loud as he purrs, which is pretty loud.

So for me, it's now back to finding some books for y'all, and then doing some more writing. What am I writing now? Another cookbook? Nope. This one is a book of gift basket ideas with some serious specifics, including a lot of Amazon links to suggested items to put in the baskets. Looking up all that stuff takes more time than figuring out the gift basket ideas! Then there are a few ideas I have for some jar mix cookbooks, for various things, so there's those to work on eventually as well. Plus wishlisting all my goodies off my seed order listing to Amazon, along with books I want ... whew. Yeah, you easily could say that even on days when I can't get out much if at all, that I am not loafing around, because there's too much to do and no time to waste. Hugs all, I'm off to find books! (WOW, there look to be a lot of goodies today!)
